Go Ballistic

Developers Grin were showing off the stupidly fast futuristic racer at the nVidia booth today, and when I say stupidly fast I mean the sense of speed in this game totally puts all others to shame, probably because they haven't limited the speed of the vehicles as they hurtle down the tubes that make up the race "tracks". At one point I hit the booster on a straight and the sense of speed was simply incredible. However, I didn't even hit Mach 1 on that straight, yet one of the developers has apparently pushed a vehicle to Mach 4, or a whopping three THOUSAND miles per hour. If you really want to master it though you'll want a decent analogue joystick - playing it with keys at such speeds makes it much harder to avoid obstacles. What at first looked like a standard racer will, I think, stand out when released simply due to the sheer speed of the gameplay and the sharp graphics. If you suffer motion sickness when playing some games, you really shouldn't play this game for a fear of spewing on your screen after a few seconds, it's that fast.

Guillemot

The very last company I visited was Guillemot. There wasn't really much to say about them that can't be better conveyed through pictures though. Their new Afterburner Force Feedback stick not only adds, guess what, Force Feedback to the Afterburner stick but it's now a sexier Wasp-like Black and Orange design, the silly flip-up cover over the thumb button is gone and the hat looks flatter and easier to grip than the tiny cone of the original Afterburner. They also had the very stylish, realistic flight stick and throttle (or HOTAS as they're better known by flight sim pros) called the Cougar which came complete with more widgets and switches on the full sized throttle than I could count. Check out the pictures on the left of these and a few other Thrustmaster/Guillemot products. At the bottom are also pictures of the new Logitech devices mentioned in yesterday's article - yes, today I remembered my camera. Just hover over the thumbnail for a description of what you're looking at.
