I'll be honest. Calling this Frequently Asked Questions is actually pretty inacurate really. I'm writing them pre-launch so obviously no one has asked them before, forcing me to make them up. But hey, why not read them anyway before emailing me any questions? Q - Pixel Kill?
A - Yeah, Pixel Kill. You could call it a dig at the big angry fuss that's recently been kicked up surrounding violent games, but I originally just came up with the name for my regular ICQ away message a while back ("off killing pixels"), and it sounded like a good name for a games site without actually having "game" in the title, since there are already a million of them. Q - What's with the lack of any scores whatsoever?
Well, what's the point? Even with a strictly explained rating system peoples's interpretations of the numbers tend to vary, and going with a simple "hit, miss or maybe" type rating system is worse. I considered a simple rating of 1-5 but ended up instead deciding on "The Verdict" which is just one or two sentences summing up the review. It does the same job as a score by giving you an at a glance summing up of what I thought of the game but with less room for interpretation and more for concise description. Or something like that. Q - I see. And you are?
Pete Closs. Formerly Games Editor for Sharky Extreme/Sharky Games before internet.com laid us all off (including Sharky himself, sadly) and closed Sharky Games due to the rather rough conditions of the internet market at the time (not that that's yet changed either). I'm an Aussie born, but I've spent half my life in England, so I can at least claim to be a counterfeit Brit if not a real one. I designed the Pixel Kill site and am mainly the one who runs it, with a bit of help from Nick Blumire with the more technical aspects to running a site.
Q - So why start a site when net advertising is currently paying peanuts, if that?
A - Well, I don't intend to make much money from the site, not for a while at least (in other words maybe when UGO start paying a bit more again), so what have I got to lose?
Q - Right. What if I want to advertise with you?
A - Drop me an email and we can take it from there.
Q - Fancy a link from my site to yours?
A - Yeah, go on then. Nab this button and drop it onto your page as the link if you fancy. Q - Do you still do freelance writing?
A - Yep! Again, drop me an email if you're looking for an article or two. I wouldn't say no to a full time job doing this either, online or in print, and can of course send along my CV on request.
Q - Why the minimalist approach to the site design?
A - Firstly, I'm only doing this part time, so an article or two a week or two is about all I can manage - why have a big site filled with only a few articles? But also I like simple and fast loading web designs for sites, so I decided to take it pretty far with Pixel Kill, which is why there are only four articles ever on the front page. Anything else is in the Archives where old stuff should be instead of on the front page. Oh, and finally, making a big site would take more time and design talent than I have. There, I said it. ;) Any other questions?
Q - Yeah, what kind of articles can we expect from Pixel Kill in the future?
A - Games and Gaming Peripherals Reviews primarily. I'd rather not churn out "me too" previews mostly filled with details you could get from 100 other sites out there, or even just from the game press release (it's happened before). Any beta copies of games I get my hands on will cetainly get the Preview treatment though. You'll more than likely see the odd interview on the site too.
Q - Can I go now?
A - Yeah, alright, be off with you.
