The only major downer with the single player game is it's over too soon. Maybe the sense of brevity is down to the three separate, shorter story lines, but it still didn't take me long to complete. I'd recommend experienced gamers play it on Hard, rather than Normal as I did, to get more playing time out of it, and if you want a really tough battle on your hands you can try Hardcore. Even if the single player still ends up being too brief, at least you'll still get your full money's worth thanks to multiplayer which Monolith have done a fantastic job on. Aside from the usual Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes there are the new modes - Survival, Overrun and Hunt. In Overrun you play either a Marine or an Alien whose objectives are to respectively defend or overrun a fortified position. It's similar to a multiplayer mode from the original AvP but there are more maps for it and the scenario rules are better defined. There is also a Hunt mode (primarily tailored for Predators vs Marines of course) where only the Hunters get frags but the Prey can become Hunters by killing a Hunter. The most interesting, though, is Survivor where you gain points for staying alive. Once killed, you become a Mutant (i.e. an Alien) and only get points for frags. The only letdown with multiplayer is the netcode, which is pretty shoddy even on low ping servers, so for now the only way to get the most out of the fully featured multiplayer mode is, sadly, on a LAN.

Despite its brevity and buggy netcode, AvP2 is the game that firmly establishes Monolith as a world class developer rid of the low quality that cursed their earlier games. It's graphically polished, wonderfully varied and involving, so much so that it's almost hard for me to believe I once doubted Monolith could get it right.

The Verdict: Fans of the original game or either movie franchise are going to love AvP2, and if you like a good story-driven action game the same applies to you, even if neither AvP2 demo impressed you. The full game is so good it puts both demos to shame.
